Episode 11

‘Abeg, get out of here’, I told Dayo angrily, I
almost told him about Yemisi but I decided
to keep calm about it. ‘Uwanah, listen to
me’, he yelled, I guess his yelling got to me
because I stopped to listen to him, ‘Uwanah,
just hear what I have to say, I’m sorry, I
know my attitude towards you has been very
bad, I’m sorry, Uwanah, please understand
that I’ve realized my mistakes and I’d like us
to start as friends’, he begged, I couldn’t
hold in my curiosity anymore then I blurted
out, ‘what of Yemisi?’, ‘Yemisi?, Yemisi is
just a friend, how do you even know
Yemisi?’, he asked, ‘must I tell you?’, I
replied angrily, ‘Oh, okay, no problem, Uwah
have you forgiven me?’, he asked, ‘this guy
dey craze ooo, I will just forgive like that na’,
I thought. ‘I will think about it’, I said
abruptly, ‘okay, goodnight’, I said and moved
the big wood plank at the entrance of my
house, I was about to go in when he said,
‘please think about what I said, goodnight,
Uwa’. I waved at him and entered my house.

My mum returned hours later, looking very
tired, she slept off as soon as she took her
bath and had dinner.

That night was a long night for me, I
pondered over Wale and Yemisi’s matter. I
was supposed to shun Wale when he talked
to me earlier that evening, somehow, I just
couldn’t bring myself to do that, I still had
feelings for him but would Yemisi become
my enemy?, she had a crush on Dayo, I still
had to think of Bola too, what would I do
about him?, I would definitely work
tomorrow, there was no way I could avoid
him. I knew that if I kept on thinking about
it, I’d have limited sleep, I cleared my mind
and slept off.

‘Uwa, Uwa’, I heard my name in my sleep,
accompanied by a slap on my back from my
mum, I woke up in anger, looked at my mum
and screamed in surprise. The day was
getting bright, I nearly blamed her for not
waking me up earlier, I needed no one to tell
me I had overslept. I hurriedly prepared, I
didn’t care to eat breakfast, I had to go to
work and fast. I scurried down the street
like a limping frog, I was getting to Dayo’s
house, I prayed silently that I wouldn’t see
him, unfortunately, my prayers were not
answered, it seemed like Dayo had been
waiting for me to pass. ‘Uwa’, he called out,
‘sorry, Dayo, I can’t wait, I’m late’, I yelled,
‘won’t you take bike?’, he asked, ‘no’, I said
and increased my pace, I didn’t want to tell
him that I couldn’t afford it. He said a few
things I didn’t hear because, I wasn’t
listening.

I heard the sound of a motor cycle coming
behind me,I decided to leave the path of the
road and walk near shop corners, I thought
the motorcycle would divert at the end of
the other road but the sound of its engine
became louder, I turned back and saw the
rider with Dayo behind. The cycle rider
stopped as soon as I saw them, Dayo came
down and asked me to hop on the motor
cycle. I was glad but I didn’t show it, saying
‘no’, was not an option, I was late, I hopped
on the motorcycle, ‘thank you, I said rudely,
he smiled at me and paid the fare. I still
didn’t know why there was a sudden change
in his behaviour, ‘where are all those girls
sef’, I thought, I planned that, when I
returned, if I saw Dayo, I’d really interrogate
his new character.

That day at work was one of the worst days,
which somehow turned around for my good,
maybe they ganged up or so but as I got to
work, one of the guys, David said the most
childish things ever, David was the most
hefty guy there, he always spoke on behalf
of the guys and most of them were afraid of
him. ‘Uwanah, you know set almost every
body for here like you shebi?, even me sef, I
no want make we dey fight because of the
matter again and I know sey, you must like
one person for here, so choose one person
for here so we go know sey na im you dey
with’, he said. I stared at him with disdain, I
was confused, I didn’t want to speak english
to him because he’d say, ‘na grammar you
dey speak’. I asked, ‘ and as I no con get
anybody wey I like nko?’ , ‘then, you go stop
to dey c-m wok na’, he threatened, ‘for what
na’, I inquired, ‘na you be the only girl for
here, wetin you dey find for where only boys
dey work?’, he asked, he was right, I was the
only girl there but there was no way I would
give up.

I wanted to defend myself, when Bola said,
‘leave am na,if she no like anybody’, ‘who
talk that thing?, he asked, ‘I say make you
leave am, no be by force, if she no wan
follow anybody’, Bola said again, ‘you dey
craze? ,na me you dey follow talk?’, David
asked going closer to Bola, David was a
potential trouble maker, I would say, he lived
for fighting, ‘I no want trouble oooo, I just
say make you leave the girl’, Bola told him,
‘e be like sey something dey worry
you’,David said as he hit Bola’s shoulder,
Bola’s nose began to twitch in fear but
somehow, he managed to hit back and a
fight broke out. ‘Wetin dey happen for
here?’, everyone kept quiet as we heard Mr.
Soji’s question.
