SWEET MEMORIES

Location: state house, Abuja.

Hot rays of the sun fought their way through the resisting shades. The curtains stood as the defending champions to this invasion. The room was semi-humid and cozy credit goes to german humidifiers and air conditioners strategically mounted in the state house.

President Alexander Abdul-azeez rolled to the side of the bed, rubbed his eyes and stretched his long legs.

He was waken by the reminder stop watch resting on a desk. “IGP Nwabodo in the private chamber sir” his secretary spoke through a computer.

Like most world leaders, president Alex worked like a hound. He however wouldn’t be caught worning himself out, he’d always create time for short naps in the afternoon.

When he was still a grass-root politician, he’d presumed being a president was easy peasy. Far away mountains indeed do appear green, since he stepped into the prestigious shoes, he realised uneasy lies the head that wears the crown! Sometimes he would be in meetings all through the night. He took consolation in the magnitute of respect, honour and power he commands.

The president yawned softly, sitting up with his back resting on an italian bedpost. His gaze feasted on the most valuable treasure he ever had.

The honour, riches and all didn’t matter to him like the portrait hanging on his paper white wall. He looked at the beautiful lady, a warm smile greased his lips. Madison remain the bane of his happiness though its been years since they parted. she must be a grandmother by now. He chuckled as he made mental pictures of what she would look like. Amidst his laughter was a stream of tears, he’d converted to christianity despite all odds; it cost him the joy of a family! The emir disowned him for years, it took incessant pleas for the emir to change his decision.

Alex waited for Madison, he searched every nook and crannies for her, he gave up when it dawned on him she’d made up her mind and the best he could do was to honour it. The president vowed to remain single for the rest of his life. Madison had irretrievably stole his heart! He’d refused the fact that there were many fishes in the sea. Madison was the only bird in his sky!

He glided his legs into a pair of leather slippers, stood up and walked to the door. It was an automatic eye scanner, responsive only to his iris. The computerised door slided open.

Nwabodo stood in respect upon seeing Alex. The president sat before he eased himself.

“good afternoon, Mr. President”

the president smiled. “i’ve told you to stop calling me that when its the both of us” he coed softly.

Alex and Nwabodo had been friends since their late teens. Nwabodo found his feet in national security while his friend plied the political ladder. Their paths crossed after years of parting.

“have you found the culprits’” the president asked in a concern tone, the attack on the V. P and Al-Quida black-painted Nigeria in the world security sector, he was determined to bring the culprits to book, come hell come high water.

“no sir, no leads yet” came a reply from the IGP.

The president sighed. “put in more efforts, there is no fire without ashes”
