Episode 14
As the driver got the phone from me to speak with my dad, we heard gunshots on the background that the driver looked at me,
âWhat was that? Whatâs going on! I shouted and got the phone from him.
âDaddy! I shouted on the phone but the gunshots continued.
âJoan we are attacked, my dad managed to say as I heard my mom shouting.
âWhoâs attacking? Daddy! I shouted and the line went off.
I almost opened the door not minding the bus was still moving but the woman who sat with me held me,
âWhat do you want to do? The woman asked.
âMy family is in danger please, I said struggling with her.
âPlease take it easy okay, take it easy, the driver said and called my dad number but he didnât pick up. I was crying bitterly already as I feared for my family,
âCall the police na, women at the back said.
âI know a number, I said and got the phone from the driver and dialled the police man who turned to be a family friend but he didnât pick up.
After 3 rings he didnât still pick up and I almost ran mad in the bus.
Suddenly we saw a check point and pulled over. We didnât even allow the police men to say a thing, we quickly reported what was going on.
âFor where e dey happen! One asked and I quickly called my address.
âMake I make call, one said and made a call reporting the case.
âIs it happening now? The police men asked us still on phone.
âYes o, everyone replied.
âAbeg make they go quick o abeg, some women added as the police man was still talking on phone.
âNo wahala them dey road, the police man said to us when he dropped the call and we thanked them and drove off.
Great fever held me with unbearable headache, and all the prayers and words of encouragement the women poured on me didnât enter my ears.
Then the driver phone began to ring and he saw it was my dad number,
âGirl your dad is calling, the driver said and I opened my eyes and quickly got the phone from him.
âDad what happened? Daddy? I shakily called out.
âJoan are you okay? He asked.
âDad I should ask you that, I heard gunshots, I replied.
âHmm Joan, Steve (our police friend I was calling) is wounded, he said.
âHow come? I asked.
âI actually called to tell him what you told us so he offered to help. He came down and just when we were about driving out we got attacked and he was hit but not that bad. But someone suddenly helped out and shot the person attacking and drove off, and when I went near to see who it was, behold it was an officer you should know very well, my dad narrated and I rubbed my head.
âIs the attacker dead? I asked.
âNot yet, he replied.
âDad I thought I told you not to tell the police because thereâs a betrayer in their midst, I think he was one of them, I said.
âJoan, youâll be surprised to see who it was, Steve is shocked himself, my dad said.
âIs his wound bad? I asked.
âYour mom applied a first aid and he called for backup, they are on the way to take him to the hospital, he replied.
âOkay dad, we are almost at the junction now not too far from the house, but then its too risky for us to spend the night at home, I said.
âIâll wait for you okay, should I go wait for you at the junction? He asked.
âOkay dad, but be careful okay, i replied.
âAlright alright, he said and dropped the call and i breathed out.
âAre you okay now? The driver asked and I nodded returning his phone.
âThank you sir, I said.
âIts nothing, just make sure you all leave the house this night, the driver said and I noddedâŠâŠâŠâŠâŠ.
We arrived at the junction after the driver dropped a woman off and took down her goods from the bus.
I came down and hugged my dad tight,
âWhat did they do to you? My dad asked.
âLetâs talk about that later, I replied and he shook hands with the driver thanking him.
âIts nothing, please go to a safe place, tje driver said.
âI will I will, thank you all, my dad said greeting the women which I did also and we took off home.
The backups they were waiting for arrived and we met them carrying the wounded.
My dad told me not to leave the car, at the point he didnât know who to trust anymore. I saw mu mom came out holding a bag and holding my brother hand tight andtgry lookef at my dad wjen he met with them nut he blinked at rhem.
âGo put the bag in the car, my dad said to them and remains with the police men while they came and hugged me inside the car without the police noticing.
âLook at you, just look at you Joan, mymim said crying, i know she must be going through lots of shocks and worry.
âIâm back mommy, Iâm back, I said and hugged my brother.
âSo make we follow you na in case of anything, we heard an officer said to my dad.
âNo no its okay, we can manage, my dad said.
âBut its late and you just saw what happened, he insisted.
âI know but the place is not far, its a relation place very close so you donât need to bother, my dad said and held Steve hands.
âYouâll be fine okay, my dad said to him.
âTake care of your family okay, Steve said.
âI will, we will visit in the morning, my dad said and left but my eyes remained on the police man who insisted to go with my father. His face was too suspicious and the way he looked at my dad said it all.
My dad opened up the car and drove off and my mom hugged me tight again,
âDad that police man, I donât trust him, I told him before it will slip my memory.
âMe too, I will look into his case tomorrow, my dad said.
âWhere are we going to now? I asked.
âThe woman offered to take us In and she has been waiting. Talk to her, my dad replied and was about calling the woman whose husband died but her call entered which I picked up.
âWhatâs the situation there? She asked immediately.
âGood morning ma, I said.
âJoan? Oh my God Joan youâre safe? She shouted.
âYes ma and we are on the way, I replied.
âOh please do I have been waiting, she said.
âWeâll be there soon, my dad and I dropped the call and smiled keeping my head on my mom chest.
âJoan they touched your face, what happened? My mom asked still with a sad look. Sheâs one mother who is so concerned about her children skin more than anything in the world. And my skin especially my face was designed with bruises.
âMom sheâs tired, letâs find shelter first, my brother said.
âDear we all have questions to ask her, but not now okay, my dad said referring to my mom and she heaved.
âOkay okay, she said touching my hair.
âDad who helped out when the betrayer attacked? I asked.
âI canât tell, he just appeared with a car and shot him and drove off. He saved us big time because we were not expecting such a thing not even Steve, my dad replied.
âDad whats the colour of the car? I asked.
âRed, my brother replied and my mouth flew opened.
âWhat is it? my mom asked and i raised my head from my mom.
âEbuka, he helped out after saving me from them. He was the one who told me to tell you to leave, looks like there was a plan all along, I replied.
âIs that so? My brother asked.
âBut he left me on the road, it must be him who came around to check on you, I said and the pains from my back began.
âAre you okay? My mom asked when she noticed the change on my face.
âMom I need to be checked, I was hit on my spine, i replied.
âWhat! My brother shouted.
âOh my God! What did they do to you! My mom began to cry that i regretted i told her in the first place.
âMom please donât start, its not like Iâm dying, I saidâŠâŠâŠ
