Episode 29

I don’t remember anything about the wedding night.

Now, that’s just great.

I shouldn’t be drinking so much, I’m an idiot.

When I went downstairs I directed myself towards the dining room, my mood brightened as I heard Remi’s cheerful voice and Casey’s sincere laugh.

My sister and Rafael’s brothers were getting along better now. They were still fighting from time to time but after the conversation, something definitely changed.

“So where are we going on our honeymoon?” Remi asked half-jokingly, half-seriously after we all gathered for breakfast.

“You had a wedding that I don’t know anything about?” Rafael asked, raising his eyebrows slightly.

“I can’t have a wedding without telling you first?” 2

“You can just never set your foot at this house ever again if you do”

I couldn’t tell if Rafael was joking or was it a serious threat. I’d love to watch them banter all day, but I had to go to work.

“I have to go, see you soon,” I said, looking at my watch. As if on cue, Rafael grabbed my waist and pulled me to himself so I was now trapped in his warm embrace.

“Where are you going on a day after our wedding?”

Yeah, a fake wedding for a fake relationship why is he acting as if I’m doing something wrong?

“To work”

“When was the last time you had the day off?” Rafael asked, seemingly calm.

“Why?”

“Just answer”

“I don’t know maybe a month ago? Why?”

“Because I think you should rest”

“I can’t just call them and say I’m not going to show up today my new husband thinks I should rest”

“I think you can and you will”

„Yup it’s a good time to leave” this wasn’t me or Rafael saying that. It was Remi’s speaking.

“Time to get out” Milo agreed. “Come Casey, mom and dad are going to argue”

Rafael sends his brother a warning look while I yelled “hey” before me and Rafael continued our discussion.

“Eliana what I would like to know is why you’re overworking yourself. It can’t be just about money”

“I don’t have time right now, we can talk about it later” I forcefully pulled myself away from his embrace but I knew that I’m able to get away only because he lets me.

I regretted escaping him as soon as I was forced to stand in front of him, he was looking at me with an unreadable expression and arms crossed over his chest.

“We can talk about it now” he responded firmly.

Okay, then I realized I’m not getting out of this house until I answer him.

“It’s just that… Casey finally started getting good grades, she doesn’t spend all day and night out of the house doing God-knows-what, she’s not so angry all the time. She resembles the Casey I know from before”

“What does it have to do with your work?”

“I haven’t been able to take care of her so far. I couldn’t afford tutoring, I couldn’t afford a good apartment or school, I couldn’t enforce any sort of rules for her. No wonder she was struggling so far I’m just a horrible guardian “

“You think it’s the money that changed her behavior?”

I was quiet for few long seconds.

“I think they certainly helped”

“How many days did you work a week when you were with her?”

“5 days a week, sometimes 6”

“When did you have time to talk?”

“We didn’t have time”

“What about now?”

“You mean like since I started living here?” He nodded. I took my time to answer “we talk more often but it’s because Casey is not going out like she uses to”

“Casey needs attention. You aren’t doing her any favors by working two shifts a day. You have to slow down “

“It’s my decision how much I work”

“Then try to leave the house without my permission and we’ll see if it’s your decision” 4

“I don’t like it when you are like that”

“Then it will be more pleasant when you learn to listen to me”

“Thank God this marriage is temporary,” I muttered under my breath shaking my head. 21

He slowly followed me, tugged my hair slightly, “Do you want to do repeat that, baby?”
