Episode 11

Betty stared blankly at the prison walls, she was
lucky to be alone in her cell- the police count her
too
dangerous to stay with other prisoners; since she
was a murderer.
She’ve been here for a week now, no one has
come to
see her, except the few officers who came to
interrogate her.
The barred door to her cell opened with a
squeaking
sound. Another interrogation again! She rolled her
eyes. “Criminal!” a policeman sneered. She didn’t
look up, she fastened her eyes to the floor. “come
with me, some people are here to see you” She
got up reluctantly and followed him. Edith and her
mother were there. She froze, what was
she going to tell her mum? .
She stoped a few metres
away from them, she started counting her toes.
“Betty?” Edith’s voice was weak, she rushed
towards
her friend. “I’m sorry..” Edith was sobbing.
They hugged each other. She hugged her mum
gingerly. Her mum was weeping
on her shoulders. She bit her lower lip, she was in
deep pain! But she
did not cry.
She has made up her mind never to cry,
she won’t let life mock her. “Enough! You’ve
exhausted the five minutes you were
granted.” the policeman pulled Betty away. She
could hear her mother wailing, but she didn’t look
back. She was used to life.
:
She sat down; legs spread on the floor.

Edith was
spoon feeding her, while her mum looked on. Dr
Amah
paid alot of money before she was allowed to
bring
food for her daughter. “Take some water.” she
said gently. “Is…They’ve…is Emeka buried?” Betty
stammered. Edith shook her head “The body is
missing.” “Missing?” Betty gasped.
“Did I hear you say missing?” she whispered
fiercely. “Life…” she said meditatively. “Eat up.” Dr
Amah wanted to change the topic. “Eat up? Did
you say eat up?” Betty faced her mum. “do you
know who Emeka is to me?” her eyes
narrowed. “you guys can leave now, thanks for
coming to see
me.” she waved them off. “But our time isn’t up.”
Edith protested. “and I am tired of seeing your
faces” Betty snapped. They left her in peace.
As the walked slowing towards Dr Amah’s car,
Edith
noticed a black jeep, she’d have seen it somewher
e
before.
The occupant was a male in a black Jacket, he
said
something into a reciever and drove off. “Did you
see that jeep?” Edith asked Dr Amah. “yes.” Dr
Amah unlocked her car. “There’s something fishy
about it..” Edith said quitely. Dr Amah simply
grunted, Edith sighed and got into
the car.

Edith stood by the road side trying to flag down a
taxi. A jeep pulled up beside her- same as the one
she saw few days ago. It’s occupant got out, it
was Tiger.
She gasped. “so, whats up?” Tiger moved towards
her, she looked
away. “where are you going?” he asked again.
She remained mute. “I heard what happened, how
is Betty?” he pestered. “how is Betty?” she
mimicked him.
“And why do you want to know?” she queried.
“cos I feel I need to know” He looked at her
squarely. “hmn, you don’t need to know! How am
I sure you aint
the killer” Edith retorted. “Killer?” Tiger smiled.
“Well…” he pocketed his hands. “Jay-jay will be in
town tonight.” he added. “Did I ask you to tell
me?” she snapped. He laughed.
“Well…I thought I should inform you…atleast
before
he comes to see you.” he said gently. “Coming to
see me or kill me? Please o…just leave
me alone.” her voice was rising. “whats making
you think we are responsible for what
happened to Betty?” He asked again gently.
“Question!” Edith hissed.
“Stop following me about. You’ve done enough
damage already.”
She stoped a taxi and got into it. He, Jay-Jay and
all are rubbish! She is not scared of
them, they should kill her self! Mtchew! Edith
stood before JaY-Jay, she counted her toes,
then she stared at them.
“You haven’t answered my question…how is
Betty?”
jay-jay asked her.
She fastened her eyes to the ground. “hope I’m
not talking to a brick wall?” he queried “I don’t
know”. Jay-jay chuckled.
“Tiger said, you told him we’re responsible for
what
happened”
“now how could you think like that?” Edith
grimaced. “my boys were there when it happened,
the killer
was a female, they could not catch her…” he
swallowed hard
“I sent a word to all campuses in this federation,
she
must be fetched out.” he stoped to look at her.
Edith was speechless.
“I’l leave you alone now, tomorrow morning you’l
take
me to see Betty” he concluded.
