Episode 5
Betty sipped some water and swirled it in her
mouth
before swallowing it., that was her fifth glass, she
was lying down on the soft rug watching
BadooTv.Com with Jay-
Jay who was sipping some wine.
Her eyes drifted to the wall clock. She suddenly
became time conscious. âJeez!âŠâ she quickly got
up âdid anything bite you?â Jay-jay asked sipping
more
wine âyesâŠno..timeâ she pointed at the clock
âwhatâs with time?â he didnât look up. âIts past
8pm already, and the gate to the hostel
closes by 7:30.â she said pitying herself âyou can
pass the night here if you wish..âhe started
she stared at him- in her wildest dreams. âIf you
think you can spend the night in the harem of
cultists, then you are welcomed.â He added
smiling. âNoâ. She said almost in a whisper
âuhm?â âIâm leaving nowâ she said picking her
purse. âokay.â he picking up something that
looked like a
recieverâbring over the camryâ he said into it.
âLemme drop you off.â he told her. âIâm going to
Emekaâs place- I..iâll spend the night
thereâ her voice was low. âIâll drop you there,â he
chuckled.
He didnât seem to care. He led the way out, they
got
into the car and drove off. The journey to
Emekaâs place took 30 minutes.
âhere we are.â Jay-Jay whispered, stoping the car
right in front of Emekaâs flat. âThank youâ she
smiled âIâl call you tomorrow morningâ he was
smiling too. She knocked gently on Emekaâs door,
she is really
gonna suprise him. âHi..â she said as Emeka
opened the door. âwow..â was all Emeka could say
before pulling her
into a warm hug.
âSit down, let me get you something to eatâ he
sounded excited. She sat down; the thought of
food made her happy. âTo what do I owe this
visit?â he asked placing a
plate of jollof rice before her. Visit! âI was at Jay-
Jayâs place, I wasnât time
conscious, it got late, so I decided to come
and..you
know..spend the night hereâ she explained slowly.
âBecause Jay-Jay couldnât accomodate you for
the
night or what?â Emeka asked with a low laugh.
Betty felt insulted, she stood up gently, picking
her
purse and phone âIâm sorry for the troubleâ she
said
moving towards the door. âHey, câmon baby, that
was not what I meantâŠâ he
said apologetically. She wasnât listening, she left,
he followed her, he
looked left and right but no trace of her. He
sighed
heavily, he was in deep poo! He shouldânt have
said
those wordsâŠHe felt the world crashing at his
feet.
Betty was standing by the road side, she was
breathing heavily, she was trying her best not to
cry.
Damn it! She cursed under her breathe, who does
he
think he was anyway! She felt her forehead, her
head
was aching badly. Damn the headache! damn
Emeka! Damn the hunger she felt! DamnâŠ
A car pulled up beside her, Jay-Jay got down,
âLetâs
go home little sisâ he whispered taking her hands
gently, opened the door and she got in without a
word.
He looked at her briefly before driving off. He
helped her out of the car, sat her down on a
cushion in the living room âStop cryingâ He said
gently, she had been crying all the way. He
opened a
foil paper that contained suya âEatâ he whispered
but she shook her head âplease Nnemâ he was
pleading with her. She has
never heard that softness in his voice before, she
never knew he had the word âpleaseâ in his
dictionary. She took a piece, it tasted foul, she
made an attempt
to throw up, but he held her down. âsteady there!
Its not the suya, but your heart- its full
of painsâ he said gently, pouring some creamy
substance into a mug. âhere, drink up, itâs milkâ
she drank it all,and drank another serving halfway
before keeping the mug down. He pulled her up
and
moved her towards his bedroom. âyou need to
sleepâ He whispered tucking her in bed.
He put off the lights leaving only the bedside
lamp. âIf you need anything, press the bellâ he
told her
showing her a button by the bedside. âgoodnight,
Iâll share the spare room with Tigerâ he
explained before leaving the room. Her eyelids
were heavy, she closed them gently, this
is where she belongs-home. She was awakened
by the sound of a gun shot. She
sat up abruptly pushing the bed covers away, she
looked around; Yikes! It was morning. She
pressed the
bell button on impulse.
The door squeaked and opened with Tigerâs head
poking in.
âYou need anything?â he asked he doesnât have
the courtesy to greet! Mtchew.
âWhereâs Jay-Jay?â she ignored his question. âhim
don comot, e say make I tell you say him dey
come now nowâ tiger replied alittle bit politely.
âthe gunshot?â her voice was low, âRox was
loading his gunâ he explained with an
amused look who ever Rox was! Mtchew!
âThanksâshe watched him
shut the door. What the heck was Jay-Jay
thinking leaving her here?
What if Tiger beheaded her? She shuddered.
Getting up gently, she moved towards the
bathroom.
Slowly she washed her face trying to wave
Tigerâs
murderous face off her mind. She looked up at
the
mirror, her eyes were swollen. Mtchew! MaybeâŠ
âBetty?â Jay-Jay called her she froze, âWhereâs
this girl?â she quickly wiped her face and ran out.
âThere you are! How was your night?â he asked
dropping a polythene bag on the table . âGood
morningâ she sat down âuhmâŠyour eyes are
swollen, you cried alot
yesterday..â he squatted beside her âwanna talk
about it?â he continued. She shook her
head. âokayâ he sighed pulling the polythene bag
towards
him.
He brought out a flask, bread, butter and boiled
eggs.
âbreakfastâ he told her standing up to get a mug.
Gently he served her while she ate. âYou have
lectures today?â he asked, she nodded. âEat up let
me take back to school.â he sounded like a
father, she wanted to laugh but kept a straight
face.
Betty was walking as fast as her legs could carry
her,
Emeka too was running after her. Why was he
following anyway, canât he just leave her alone?
Mtchew! âPlease BettyâŠâ emeka pleaded holding
her arm. âwhatâs it?â she glared at him âplease
Iâm sorry, I swear I didnât mean to hurt you by
those wordsâ he sounded desperate. âhmmn, Iâve
heard, you didnât mean those words but
you said them? I thought you were a friendâ she
started walking away âBut I love youâ He
screamed after her. She stopped in her track, her
heart racing fast, did he
just say those words to her? A crowd of students
began to gather. âPlease baby, I truly love you, I
wouldnât hurt youâ
emeka was now on his knees. âgosh! Please
stand upâ she was nervous âforgive meâ he
pleaded âI forgive you, please stand up, weâre
creating a
sceneâ her voice was shaky.
He stood up gently âthanks you.â he was
searching
her eyes âI love you tooâ she said quitely, those
tears were
welling up again. They hugged each other warmly
and the crowd of
student clapped and cheered.
âehen! See love nwantiti!â a plump girl exclaimed
before walking off, the crowd began to disperse.
âThat was the most romantic display, Iâve ever
seenâ
it was Chuks. âolâboy I feel you!â Chisom
exclaimed âHIâ Betty was grinning widely âNwa
oma, I never knew Romeo and Juliet were still
aliveâ Chuks chuckled. Oh yes! She felt fulfilled, at
least. âThis calls for a celebrationâ Edith said
from behind
them. Betty hugged her. âyesâchuks and chisom
chorused. âI guess sahara sweets will doâ Edith
suggested and
they all moved towards Emekaâs car. Bettyâs
phone rang, it was a text message, she
opened it⊠âHey little sis, I saw that episode, I

Students were crowded round the notice board

Edith
were among them. Their end of semester result

Betty got a second class upper, but a course was
ticked absent, she gasped. âhow comes?â Edith
asked âdonât knowâŠbut i wrote the examâ Betty
sounded
confused. Edith thought for a while..
âErrm, come, letâs go to see the lecturer.â she
suggested. âwhat are you gonna do?â â never
mind, come with me.â Edith said taking her
hands.
The lecturer was a female. Mrs Okoro.
âGood afternoon maâ they both chorused âHow
may I help you?â mrs Okoro asked without
looking up. âour statement of result says Betty
Amah, was absent
during your examsâ Edith started. âSo?â âshe
wasnât absent, she wrote the exams.â Edithâs
voice was rising now. â Who knows, maybe her
paper got missingâ Mrs
okoro replied eyeing Betty. âThat paper isnât
missing, we need to see her
bookletâ Edith snapped.
Betty gasped- Edithâs gat the liver âListen girls,
leave my office before I get provoked.
Donât you have manners?â Mrs Okoro was visibly
angry now. âlisten madam!â Edith was smiling
âIt seems you donât know who Betty Amah is..â
edith
moved towards the table âhave you heard of Jay-
Jay
before?â she continued. Mrs Okoro glanced at
Betty, then at Edith âYes.â she
said quitely. âGood, and hope you know what he
can do when you
tamper with his affairs? I guess you love your
lifeâ
Edith wore a triumphant look. Mrs Okoro looked
frightened.
Edith and Betty made
to leave. âWait pleaseâ Mrs Okoroâs voice was
shaky. âI have the scripts hereâ she said opening
her locker. âOh..â Edith smiled mischievously. âShe
had an âAâ, Iâm sorryâ Mrs Okoro was visibly
scared. âSo why did you hide it?â Edith asked âIâŠ

gasped. âanyway, thats your headache, amend

Mrs Okoro said slowly.
Betty and Edith left the office happily. âWhatâs up

Jay-Jayâs nameâ Edith chuckled. âhmmnâ âcmon

Betty laughed at the mention of Emekaâs name,
