Betty and her friend Edith rushed into their room
gleefully. âGirlie, you are too much.â edith said
hugging her
friend. âYou show her say you no be Igbo girl wey
dem born
and train in yoruba land for nothingâ Edith was
praising her.
Betty laughed.
âHave you ever seen me dance before?â she asked
Edith. âOmo, you sabi dance? Edith was laughing
too. âHey! Play this songâŠerrm, is it gaga crazy?
That one
the guy was saying âsugar cane no be
bambooâ..you

really going crazy!â Edith replied searching
for the song in her phone. They both started
dancing, celebrating victory.
Bettyâs
phone rang.
âWho is it again!â she hissed âWho is it?â âWho
else? Emeka now! â Betty threw the phone and
it fell on the bed. âHello?â Edith picked the call
âHello? BabyâŠâ âSheâs not the one, she canât talk
to you now! Call her
laterâ Edith snapped ending the call. âGo and learn
how to beg properlyâ she hissed.
Betty was still dancing and humming âwho is in
the
garden, a little fine, can I come and see her? No
no no
noâ Edith laughed smacking her buttocks. âDonât
reduce the size oâ Betty warned her playfully,
before slumping into bed.
Jay-Jay was kneeling down before his father
Chief
Robert Ezigbo. The whole place was tensed.
âjacobs! What has come over you? You- a cultist?
Unbelievable!â Robert yelled at his son. âwhat
happened to the godly upbringing I gave you?
You know how much reputation I have in this
society?â Reputation my foot! I like what Iâm
doing, leave me
alone- Jay-Jay wanted to snap. âIâm sorry dad.â
he said in a low voice âshut up! Now listen, no
more schooling for you!
Youâre going to work in my company at
Zimbabwe! Iâve
made arrangements, youâre leaving next
week!âRobert
yelled before walking into his room.
Jay-Jay gasped, the first thought he had was
Betty,
he canât leave her, not while G-gal is still alive.
Exams was fast approaching, all the serious
students
are getting excited, while the dull ones are getting
nervous. Betty was sitting with Emeka (theyâve
reconciled) and
Edith in the Library, they were studying with keen
interest.
She soon got bored;
âIâm tiredâ she sighed. âme tooâ Edith whispered
while Emeka grunted. âand famished tooâ Edith
added. âLets go to the coke village, we can come
back here
laterâ Betty suggested. âYou guys go, I wanna
finish solving this physics.â
Emeka told them. They both left hurriedly
because the Libarian was
looking at them. Betty sipped her juice.
âGirlie, Iâve been watching you for some time now,
you seem withdrawn, always looking distant, wats
up
friend, or is it the exams?â Edith asked biting at
her
chicken. âhmmâ betty smiled âcome Betty! I asked
a question and you just smiled?â
Edith queried âIâm fineâ Bettyâs voice was low. âI
know that, but you aint fine in thereâ Edith
pointed
towards her heart âIts just that..IâŠits Jay-Jayâ
betty told her. âWhats with Jay-Jay ?â âHe said
heâs gonna be away for just two weeks, but
its almost a month now, no trace of him, no calls,
no
textsâŠand worst of all Exams is just two weeks
away.â
Betty explained looking down at her food âdonât
worry, heâs gonna be fine, He would be back
soon, okay, Jay-Jay can take care of himselfâ
Edith
was trying to cheer her up. âOkayâ Betty sighed.
âCheer up jor, eat up fast, Emeka is waiting!â Edith
told her with a smile.
Betty managed a low laugh.
Jay-Jay was pacing to and fro in his room. He
was
deep in thoughts. He has locked himself up in his
room since last night, not even his fatherâs
persistent
knockings made him open the door.
Rubbish! He drew a sharp breathe, what was his
father thinking anyway? Zimbabwe of all
countries!
His fingers ran through his hair roughly. For
once, he
regretted being a Robertâs family member. He
wondered what could be going on with Betty,
Tiger called this morning to say she is alright, but
even stillâŠ
He is not satisfied The person who told his father
he is a cultist will
surely pay for this! For the first time he wished
he had a mother. He had
never known her, neither did his dad tell him
about
her. He resigned never to ask about her, cos he
thought sheâd be dead. A sharp knock interrupted
his thoughts⊠What the heck is this man looking
for again! He
groaned. He moved away from the door
determined not to
open it. His dad should just leave him alone!
âJacob please open the doorâ Robert pleaded. Jay-
Jay inserted his fingers into ears. âBiko, open the
door.â Robert pleaded again. âWhat is it?â Jay-Jay
glared at his father, opening the
door slightly. âCan I come in?â âWhy?â âWe need to
talk.â Mr Robert looked sober.
Jay-Jay opened the door wider letting his father
in. âSit downâ Robert said quitely sitting on an
arm chair. Jay-Jay didnât sit down, he rested his
back on the wall
instead, folding arms across his chest. âI said
sitâŠâ âI donât wanna sit!â he cut his father short.
âIf you donât sit, then we wonât talkâ Robert sighed
âThat means you aint ready to talkâ âJacob do you
realize youâre talking to your father?â
Robertâs voice was rising. âyes I do.â âJacobs
what has come over you?â Robert yelled. âNothing
at all!â Robert gasped. He shook his head gently
âLinda!â he
muttered under his breathe. âWhat?â Jay-Jay
couldnât help asking. âYour mother, you sound
just like her, stubborn and
unrulyâ Robert said gently. Jay-Jay was shocked,
his mother?! âJacob, you are just like your mum!
She ran away
when you were just one year old, I havenât seen
her, I
came back to Nigeria cos of her, but canât find
her.â
He said painfully. âJacob, you are my only sonâŠâ
he continued.
âI want the best for you. Ever since your mum left
me,
Iâve set my hope on you, my life is strapped on
youâŠâ his voice became shaky. Jay-Jay melted
within, he sighed. âJacob please, donât let me
down.â Jay-Jay squatted beside his father.
âDad I love you, you know that, I wonât hurt youâŠâ
âYou already did, you joined a cult!â âOkay dad,
letâs strike a deal, youâl let me go back to
school and Iâll shun cultism.â He said placing an
arm
round his father. âI want your happiness, youâre
going back to school
tomorrow, please amend your waysâ Roberts said
quitely. âLove you dadâ Jay-Jay hugged his father.
âLove you sonâ Robert hugged him tightly. âSo
dad, tomorrow right?â he sounded excited.
âYea, promise me youâll look for your motherâ
Robert
smiled faintly. âYeaâ Jay-Jay cared less. âCome let
me show you her pictureâŠâ Robert stood
up.
Jay-Jay followed him, Oh yes! Tomorrow heâl be
in
school.
