LINDA

Ever since God delivered me from that horrible Chief Adejumo’s grasp , I swore an oath never again to continue to do any prostitution work ever again.. The main reason why I was even doing it in the first place was to get money for my brother’s treatment but if I had died now.. Who would look after my helpless brother? I don’t care how much they paid me… I’m never, ever going back there.

A few days passed after that night…. I’ve been at home throughout those days hiding in case the chief might not spot me on the road… Regina had noticed this strange manner of mine and decided to find out what was going on?

Regina Linda, wetin dey happen? Why haven’t you been going to work?

Linda Nothing… I’m just resting that’s all.

Regina Linda… I know you… You only rest on weekends and you’ve been acting as if you’re trying to avoid someone… Tell me, is something wrong.

I took a deep breath and told Regina everything that happened… She gasped with shock as she listened to every word I said.

Regina JESUS! this man wants to use you for money ritual. Kai… You’re one lucky woman o. So what now?

Linda What now? I’m not going back o… Never.. I’m the only family my brother’s got.. And if I had died now, who would look after him. I’m going to look for a job that isn’t life threatening.

Linda I really don’t know… Look Regina can’t you help me find a job, any one.. A job that pays like 20 to 30k please… I know you have contacts, i’m sure they can come up with something.

Regina Hmmm, I’ll check and see… I remember one of my friends saying she’s looking for a nanny… I’ll call her and see if she’s still looking for one…

Linda Thank God… I hope she’s hasn’t found one yet… At least it’s better than that stupid prostitution job.

As we were talking…. We heard a knock on the door, Regina went to check to see who it was….. After awhile, she called me to the door, As soon as I got there, I froze with shock as I saw Madam Paprika… How in the world did she know where I lived.

Paprika Linda…. What’s with you? Why haven’t you been coming to work? And what was that stupid stunt you pulled at the party?

Linda Stupid stunt? Did you know what the chief did? He tried to use my body for some ritual and upon that he assaulted me… I’ve had enough…

Paprika This girl…. You’re so naive… You’re lucky I’ve calmed the chief down and he’s forgiven you… Now I want you to come to work… The customers are asking of you.

Linda Sorry ma… I quit….

Paprika WHAT? Kini?

Linda I said, I QUIT!!! I’M DONE.. KAPUT.. FINITO… NO MORE.

Paprika You’re not making sense… Do you know what you’re saying? You’re going to miss out on a lot of money.

Linda I don’t care… My life is more valuable than some piece of paper.

Paprika Come on.. Don’t……

Regina MADAM! leave her alone na… She said she’s done… Let her be.. Na by force? .. No be dole.. Its her right to decided what she wants..

Paprika You ungrateful b—h… After all I’ve done for you…

Linda Done for me? What have you done? The only thing you do is tagging me with men to do as they please with me… You don’t care about me… All you care about is making money out of us and if any one of us should be inactive, you’ll throw us out… I want to live my life like any normal person.

Paprika You’ll regret your decision…. You think you have any future? Just look at you.. You’ll never be worth anything.

Regina Madam abeg dey go… What’s your problem? Leave now!! LEAVE!

Madam Paprika hissed and walked out of the compound… Regina followed her out with insults… After that we went back to the room… My mind was disturbed about what Madam Paprika said, As if Regina was reading my mind, she assured me everything would be fine.

Regina Don’t mind that goat… She’s just trying to make you feel hurt and dejected… Nobody knows tomorrow.. By Gods grace your future will be a bright one.

Linda Thank you Regina.

Later, I went to the hospital to see my brother… As usual I bought him some treats along the way… As soon as I arrived at the hospital… I went straight to reception to let them know I was here to see Andy.

Seconds later, I was allowed to go see him and as I got into the room, I noticed Andy was sleeping… I wasn’t expecting that because I wanted to talk to him and to know how he’s feeling but it looks like that won’t be possible.

After a while, I dropped the goodies for him and left the room.. As I was about to leave the hospital, I collided with Pastor.

Pastor Linda…. It’s been a while… I haven’t seen you for weeks now… And why have you stopped coming to church? Have you gotten the money for what we discussed.

Linda Please excuse me… I don’t have your time.

.

Pastor Jesus! So the prostitution has gotten hold of you like this..

Linda You have no right to say that, you pervert… And the reason why I stopped coming to church was because I found out it’s a house of sin.

Wise men say Silence is the best answer for a fool but under this circumstances, I couldn’t just let this go… No way, this man had no right to call me that…. Immediately he said that, I followed back with a thundering slap on his face… Everyone in the hospital turned around as they heard the slap..

The pastor held his cheek in shock.. He was speechless and dumbfounded…. People around the place began to whisper and murmur… I paid them no attention, as I left the hospital…

A few days later…

Regina promising to get Linda a job meets Cecelia at a restaurant… Both ladies knew each since their secondary school days and have remained in touch ever since.

Here at the restaurant, both ladies chat and laugh as they talk about Cecelia’s brother Tony.

Regina (laughs) Hmmm, I can still remember the look on brother’s face when you reported him to the principal… He was so angry he could kill you.

.

Cecelia That Tony will never grow up.. I’m still dealing with that problem of his.. Jumping from one woman to another. Honestly it’s too much.

Regina He’s such a nice guy though…. So are you dating someone?

Cecelia No! Not at the moment… But there’s this guy that’s driving me crazy…

Regina Really? Who is he?

.

Cecelia My brother’s driver… His name is Chris… Babe… If you see that guy ehn… He’s hot… Cool.. Mature.. And most of all sexy.. Rrrrrr.

Regina Easy tiger… So have you made a move?

Cecelia Okay, I hope she’s not too attractive and loaded.. Because Tony would definitely hit on her, if he sees her.

Regina Well, that’s the issue.. Linda is very beautiful… No guy can resist looking at her when she passes.. But I assure you.. Tony won’t stand a chance against her..

Cecelia (laughs) You must be dreaming Regina, I haven’t seen a woman that can resist Tony’s charms.

Regina Well, you’re about to.

Cecelia Okay then.. She’s hired.. But she would have to be staying in the house from Mondays to Fridays.. She can take a leave during weekends.
