Violet’s POV:

It was evening and I had just brought out the jollof rice down from the gas cooker. Since I turned fifteen my mother never steps foot in the kitchen. Now I’m seventeen, I was the family’s chef. Mom joked she had retired from cooking till the day my husband would come to take me away.

Yeah it was a joke but trust me, I didn’t find it funny. Cooking was work. I’d rather prefer Working in the garden than spend time and energy cooking meals.

It was surprising what I prepared today for dinner. Mom had killed a chicken and had also stock the fridge with drinks. She also brought carrots and green beans to garnish the jollof rice. She mentioned that we were having a guest tonight for dinner.

A guest? And she wouldn’t let tell me who this guest was. Mom was not the type who let’s the cat out of the bag. When she wants to keep a secret, she’ll keep a secret. I’ve never prepared dinner this good for anyone except for my dad when he would be returning back home after his business journey.

Dishing out the food, I arranged the dinning table and chairs. Mom came out of the bedroom and checked what I cooked. She inhaled the delicious aroma swirling around the dinning table.

” You will definitely make a good wife, Violet. This meal proves say na me born you.”

I rolled my eyes. That was the fifteenth time she kept bringing the topic of wife and marriage. I knew I was a good cook but marriage was something I wasn’t yet ready for. I rather remain single.

Ding-dong! The doorbell rang.

” I’ll get it,” I said, side stepping my mom and heading towards the door.

Opening the door, I instantly caught my breath.

O my gosh, Adam! What in heavens name is he doing here?

Adams screwed his forehead, his face was running with confusion and questions.

” Cherry?” He asked. ” What are you doing here?”

I stared at him not knowing what else to say. He was wearing a casual trousers and a brown T-shirt that hugged his body to show off those muscles and hairs. I could also see his abs. Six in numbers. Complete and well packaged. He was wearing an incredible fragrance that made me want to smell his shirt, his neck, his arms and his face.

” I live here,” I spoke uneasy with the way he was looking at me.

His face brightened. The truth was immediately shown after all. ” Violet? Is this really you?”

I balled my hands to fists. ” Yes it’s me, you big head. Who else could it be.”

Hold on a sec.

Did I just called him big head? That was the nickname I usually called him while growing up with him. At that time, we were kids but now, we’re adults. If he took offense in what I called him just now, I’ll have no one to blame but myself.

Instead, Adam chuckled uneasily and scratched the back of his head. ” Big head, eh? You still haven’t changed one bit, don’t you Violet?”

I didn’t say anything.

” Come on, Violet. Won’t you invite me in? I’m surprised you still haven’t given me a warm welcoming hug after my being away for such a long time.” He lamented.

” I don’t hug boys,” I said defensively. ” Especially boys who desert their friends at the slightest opportunity.”

This got Adam in the mood and he laughed. ” This is interesting. You still haven’t changed a bit. Alright I’m here now, let’s go inside and talk about it, shall we?”

” I don’t want to talk about anything, definitely not from you,” I said with a hint of hatred in my voice and left him at the door.

He was surprised by my attitude towards him but I couldn’t care less. Maybe I took it a little too far, maybe I didn’t. I didn’t know and I didn’t care. I marched up to my room and shut myself in.

Mom called me from downstairs. ” Violet, come down for dinner. Our guest is here.”

But I didn’t come down. I stayed on my bed, hugging my pillow tightly against my chest.

Mom came upstairs and knocked on my door. ” Violet, open up. What is the matter with you, our guest is….”

” I don’t want to see him,” I said with a broken voice. ” Tell him to leave me alone.”

Mom still knocked. ” I don’t get it. Open up your door let’s go downstairs to welcome him. Adam is….”

I cut her off with a loud voice this time. ” I said I don’t want to see him. Just leave me alone, mom.”

Mom didn’t say anything. I bet she was hurt from the way I raised my voice. I heard footfalls down the stairs to the living room.

I scrambled out of bed and fixed my ears to the keyhole. I heard mom and Adam speaking.

” I’m sorry for that, Adam. I just don’t understand what came over her.”

” Don’t let it bother you, Mrs Kalu. I’m sure she’s just upset. She would come around eventually. I’m sure of it,” Adam voice reached my ears.

I went back to my bed and fell on it. I wiped a tear out of my eyes. ” What was wrong with me?”

I buried my face in my palms, feeling my heart beating faster as the thoughts of Adams clouded my mind.
