Read Story: SEASON 1 EPISODE 31

2 Months Later.

Crayons laid scattered at the center of my office. I stared at the blonde head bent down busy drawing. Dylan had flown to the States with his grandma for holidays.

I had spoken with Pastor Thomas over this issue. I wanted to know if it was okay for me to get married after going through a divorce. I was never going to forget Uri, not because i love him too much but because my two kids were from him

. He had been my husband for four years. I could not wipe that out of existence. It was always going to be there.

There was also an inner struggle within me. Uri had been from my own kind. We spoke the same language and shared the same traditions. Growing up i always wanted a different marriage. We had fourty tribes within the country. Why settle for a man from my own tribe? Why not go global? Don’t we all just want to make our situation unique? Was i attracted to Austin because he was white? That should not be a basis for any relationship.

Then there was the fact that i was pregnant.

I kept swirling in the train of thoughts, occasionally rubbing Sammy’s head.

“Am done.” Sammy said dangling the painting in front of my face.

“Let’s see what we have here.”

I took the drawing from him. It had in it a man and a woman and a boy in between.

“Who are these people?”

“They are my family.” He responded.

I looked at him smiling

. Poor thing. He must still be trying to keep the memory of his mother alive.

“Your mother would be proud if she was here.”

He smiled weirdly.

“Why are you smiling like that?” I asked amused.

“That’s you in the drawing, you are my mum now.”

Shocked i looked down at the photo. I noticed an oval shape drawn around my belly area. It was somehow supposed to show my bulge. Unable to control myself i found my tears flowing.

“Are you okay Ella?” Sammy asked innocently.

“Am more than fine, never been better.” I said laughing in between tears.

“Okay, what do you think about my drawing?”

“It’s beautiful.”

“It gets to go to the fridge?”

“It sure does.”

He took the drawing and rolled it, then tied it with a ribbon.

“Your dad will be here in a few, let’s get you all packed up.”

We placed the crayons and the drawings in his bag pack. All the while asking him how they managed staying two people alone. He told me something about his dad’s cousin and Dylan’s grandma taking care of him when his father was busy and away.

Ten minutes later Austin had arrived in the company of a friend. A white friend. I had been able to dodge him for a whole two months, mostly because he had been too busy with work. I stood holding Sammy’s shoulder.

“He is all set.” I assured Austin hoping he would get my cue of not wanting to engage in a conversation.

“Ella this is my cousin George. He normally take cares of Sammy when am out on business.”

“Nice to meet you George.”

He nodded casually and we fell into awkward silence.

“Can i use the restroom?” Austin asked.

“Yes sure, its out that door, a few steps to the right.”

Austin walked out while we watched.

“You can have a seat while you wait for him.” I offered George.

“No thanks.” He said.

“Buddy can you wait outside for a bit. I need to talk to your doctor.” He told Sammy.

Without objection Sammy left the room. I felt uncomfortable under his gaze.

“There is no time so am going to say it as it is. Austin is my brother. I know your type.”

“What do you mean?”

“You meet a rich white guy and he shows a little interest in you and you see a chance out of your poverty. A chance to live a better life. You just can’t find a fellow black man and live us alone.”

My mouth dropped in shock. Did he just say that to me? Was i being discriminated against right now?

“Why would you say that?” I asked in a voice that did not sound like mine. My whole body was shaking.

“Please stop the water works before they come. You are pregnant. Why would you bring your baggage to a nice innocent man?”

“He loves me.”

“Oh come on. There are a lot of beautiful women of our own kind. Blonde, brunettes, red haired, brown eyes, blue eyes, green eyes. Why would you deceive yourself?”

“He loves me.” I whispered.

He made a small chuckle.

“Stay away from Austin, don’t be a bother.”

Shaking and in tears i sat myself on the chair. I heard him as he left the room. I removed my rubber shoes and sank deeper into the chair. Minutes later Austin came back into the office.

“They are waiting for you at the parking lot.” I said while looking the other way at the same time trying to wipe my tears with my other hand.

“I asked George to take Sammy home. We need to talk.”

“There is nothing to talk about Austin. We honestly can’t be together.” The tears that i had been preventing him from seeing started streaming.

“Ella, did my cousin say something to you?”

“It doesn’t matter Austin. I was stupid to think we were something.”

“What did he say?” He asked in a commanding voice. It sounded like he was getting angry.

“That i was taking advantage. This it is not possible for you to love out of your race. And he pointed out the fact that is obvious, i am pregnant with another man’s child.”

“George doesn’t speak for me Ella.”

He moved closer to me. My heart beat sped up. A feeling i had lost was slowly returning to me. We had legitimate issues. Enough to stay apart but something strong kept us together. Love. It wasn’t the fairy tale kind. He sure swept me off my feet but i was seeing this time. Falling in love with every detail of him yet making sure i was not high and dreamy.

Love is when you are able to serve your patner sacrificially. Being very intentional in every move you make towards them.

“Ella, look at me.”

“Austin.”

“Please say it to me.”

“I love you Austin.”

He smiled. His blue eyes gazing deep into mine. While the wrinkles at the edge of his eyes deepened in genuine emotions.

“I love you too Ella.”

His adam apple danced. He adjusted his trouser and knelt before my chair. His white hands rested on both my laps.

“Am i good enough? I do not want to burden you with my child.”

“Ella you are not burden. And you are more than enough for me. If you accept me i would wonder what i did to be enough for you. I love you and i can’t say enough. If my actions can’t tell it i don’t know what can.”

He lifted his hand and held me by my neck.

“But George said.” He did no allow me to finish that statement.

“Goodness Ella. I cannot control myself around you. Am sorry but i cannot continue to live without you as my wife. I could promise you trips to all parts of this world because that i can afford. I would build you your dream house. Make any of your wishes come true, believe me i can afford it. But then all i want to give you is me and my love for you. Support you, live with you and what i would love more is to feel and taste your love. Ella, would you please marry me.”

I slid of the chair in disbelief. He adjusted to let me kneel in front of him.

“So what do you say Ella?”

“Yes i will marry you Austin.”

“So Mrs. Brooks to be. I do not have a ring to slip into that delicate beautiful finger but i have my watch and am going to use it as my proposal ring.”

He removed his watch and fastened it around my wrist.

He gave me a soft lingering kiss on the lips.

“Ella i promise i will always love you, no matter what.”

” I believe you.”

I got from my kneeling position and sat. He sank beside me.

“I would love for you to come and stay in my house. In my guest room. I do not want you to go back to that house and stay alone. I have talked to your parents and brother and they have given consent to everything we want to do. I just need you to say yes.”

“You have talked to my parents?”

“Of course i have. It was Jimmy’s idea.”

“You are not allowed to be Jimmy’s friend. That’s so unfair. I need to have them on my side not your side.”

“Love.”

My heart leapt. His Australian accent was doing a thousand and one things.

“Love?” He repeated.

I closed my eyes. The sound of the words on his lips was so surreal.

Read ” Grand. ” by the same author ( DORSILA ANYANGO )

. It was having an effect on me and i loved it.

“Yes love.”

“Will you move in with me?”

I nodded.

“You do not have to go to that house anymore because i am taking you home with me. The both of you. “

He stroked my bulge.

“You are my home now.”

He stood up and helped me up.

“I will still need clothes to change.”

“Jimmy is taking care of that.”

I stayed silent. This was so good. It wasn’t a fairy tale. Just a man giving the woman he loved what he believed she deserved.

“So when are we getting married.”

“What do you think?”

I smiled. I knew marriage was such a mountain and a wedding was just the first step into the door. One thing was clear to me. I loved him and i was willing to climb that mountain with him.
