Episode 3
Enobong was getting used to the live of slavary , she had gone round the compound looking for a place to escape, scaling the twelve feet fence was an impossibility, at the top of the fence was Barb wires and broken bottles, the watchful eyes of Ezra and Benjamin lurk behind her wherever she go , she had made friends with a girl a year younger than her , Chinaza was her name .
Chinaza had been the only one , who showed Eno compassion, the Nurses and madam Gold made life hell for her , for three months, she met up to five men , like a dog , but she still couldn’t take in , the nurses and Madam Gold taunted her , other girls in the home insulted her so she stayed on her own until Chinaza started talking to her . She had insisted on braiding her hair, because Enobong was looking so unkempt with her old weaving she had carried for three months .
” Why did you come here Eno ?” She asked . Enobong frowmed her face , remembering how she became a sex slave . Her face had become wrinkled like that of her mother , she had aged from frustration and sexual abuse, she felt a little warmth whenever Chinaza was with her .
” My aunt , my mother’s sister , deceived my mother and myself, she told us that she got a Nanny job for me in Aba , she ended up selling me off to madam Gold.”
Chinaza had turned up after a month Eno was imprisoned. Chinaza felt for Eno, because she had observed , that for two months, Eno hardly spoke to the girls in the compound, so she decided to make friends with her .
“Your auntie is very wicked oh! How can somebody sell her own blood, has she returned since she dropped you hear ? Eno shook her head to say no .
“Why are you shaking your head like a lizard ? Can’t you talk?” Chinaza asked
“Your shaking of your head is loosing the hair am making.”
Eno interrupted her .
“You keep asking about myself, tell me something about yourself, how did you get pregnant and ended up here ? You were not here when I came .” Chinaza smiled but kept plaiting Eno’s hair , she ignored Eno’s question and continued plaiting, but Eno insisted .
,well Well I was in SS3 , I had this boyfriend, we agreed not to do it until we got married” Chinaza laughed mischievously.
” I didn’t know I would get pregnant the first time, I want to become a medical doctor, when i put to bed I’ll return to the University” Chinaza said gleefully.
” I didn’t know I would get pregnant so soon, I want to become a medical doctor, when i put to bed I’ll return to the University. So I had a boyfriend we were only doing romance and kissing in class, there was a school party At one of our class mate’s house, everybody was doing it with their boyfriends , I decided to try it with mine, only once I got pregnant, I didn’t know I had gotten pregnant until it was five months pregnant after WEAC, I don’t know where the baby was hiding, I was still seeing my period , it was so confusing, at the fifth month my menses stopped, I was scared , I told my mum, she told my dad who was a pastor, my mother wanted me to abort the baby , but dad refused , he said blood cannot be shared in hia house . they heard of Gold orphanage , that she would take the baby from me ,and members of our church won’t know That I was ever pregnant, Madam Gold promised to give my mother five hundred thousand naira when I put to bed .”
Enobong was boiling in anger, wondering how one’s parents would sell their child into slavery.
” So you’re going to give your child up for money? Eno asked.
” Do I have a choice I can’t take care of a baby I am just seventeen?” The smile in her face disappeared.
“Maybe I’m going to search for my baby after I’ve graduated.”
They both knew that was impossible.
Madam Sharp Sharp came to the compound with another sets of girls, two were pregnant, the other girl was Ekiate , Enobong’s classmate from secondary school, Eno went mad she attacked he aunt , she bit her and toor her cloths, she livid, Benjamin and Ezra rushed to the rescue pulling Eno off her aunts body was shocked, by Eno’s ravage attack on her aunt. Eno was dragged away and locked in her room, Ekiate was taken into a room and locked there .
That night Ekiate could be heard screaming and crying till the morning, Eno couldn’t get a minute of sleep , she remembered how she was disvirgined.
After a month Chinaza got into labour , the matron and nurses prepared her to put in bed , her pelvics were too small, she couldn’t push the baby , for eight hours she was in labour, the matron told Mrs Gold about the situation, that Chinaza should be rushed to the hospital, Madam Gold told them, that she couldn’t be taken to hospital, because they would ask questions.
Eno was worried she was praying to God for the first time in four months to save Chinaza, she and Ekaite were all she had, it was around eight PM in the evening the new born baby boy was born into the world , but Chinaza died without seeing her child, Eno cried , she had never been that pained. Chinaza’s parents were informed on the phone, her body was wrapped in a bed sheet, and taken to a graveyard in the compound, Ezra dug a shallow grave and buried Chinaza there.
