Episode 8

ā€œWhoā€™s Anna?ā€ My motherā€™s words
replay in my head. What am I supposed
to tell her? That sheā€™s a ghost who
happens to live in my attic? Hell, no. I
canā€™t tell her that!
ā€œHarry, are you listening to me?ā€ No,
Mother, Iā€™m not. She must have said
something that I didnā€™t hear. ā€œI asked
you who Anna is. Does my big boy have
a girlfriend heā€™s not telling me about?ā€
Why would she think I have a girlfriend?
Iā€™ve just moved in here. ā€œWell, do you?ā€
she has one eyebrow cocked up, now;
her hands on her hips.

ā€œIā€¦something must have fell. Iā€™ll check
up on it later.ā€ There is no way Iā€™m going
back up there right now. The last time I
saw her she made it pretty clear that she
didnā€™t like me.

ā€œWell, if you did, I wouldnā€™t be
upsetā€¦although I really donā€™t like the
thought of another woman in your life,ā€
she tries to tell me, her voice cracking
like sheā€™s about to cry or something.

God, I hope not, Iā€™m really not in the
mood for dealing with my sap of a
mother. She can literally make any
situation sad or cry-able. ā€œIā€™m just afraid
youā€™re going to find somebody and forget
about me. Harry, youā€™re my only child,
itā€™s hard for me seeing you grow up. You
moving here to broke my
heart.ā€

She is practically sobbing by the time her
little confession is done, and being the
good son I am I embrace her, telling her
Iā€™ll never forget her. ā€œI love you, Harry,
now give me a kiss.ā€ She turns her face
so her cheek faces my lips.

I love my mother dearly, but thereā€™s no
way Iā€™m going to kiss her. Iā€™m twenty-
one years old, sheā€™s lucky I even hugged
her. ā€œI think Iā€™m good, thank though.ā€ I
pull back from her.

ā€œFine: I get it. You think youā€™re too old to
give your mom a kiss itā€™s, I understand.

Itā€™s not like I gave birth to you or
anything. That ten hours of labour didnā€™t
really feel good, but I get it!ā€ Thatā€™s
another thing: my mother is good at
making you feel guilty till you give into
whatever she asked; or apologize for the
rest of your life.

I groan, giving in and placing a quick
peck to her cheek, wiping my mouth off
right afterwards. ā€œYouā€™re still a Mommaā€™s
boy.ā€ She smiles and pinches my cheeks.

I swear if she doesnā€™t start treating me
like an adult Iā€™m going to have to go find
a condom and throw it at her, reminding
her Iā€™m not five anymore.

ā€œMy boy is so handsome. I think I did
pretty good.ā€ She smiles, examining her
work.

ā€œMother, thatā€™s a bit weird,ā€ I call her out
on her weird way of complimenting
meā€¦Or maybe sheā€™s complimenting
herself. Iā€™m not really for sure.

ā€œHush or Iā€™ll put you in timeout,ā€ she
warns, pointing a finger at me and
chuckling to herself. She knows this
drives me insane, thatā€™s why she does it.

She asks to watch a movie.

The next morning, I wake up and take a
shower before heading towards the
kitchen. I need to work today, so Iā€™m
hoping my mother wonā€™t be to upset.

When I enter the kitchen sheā€™s sitting at
the counter with a cup of coffee in her
hands. ā€œDid you sleep well?ā€ Sheā€™s the
first one to speak.

ā€œYeah,ā€ I lie. I slept horribly. He filled
my dreams, causing me to wake up in
the middle of the night; sweat gathering
at my forehead.

ā€œThatā€™s good.ā€
I pour myself some coffee and grab an
apple off the counter before biting into
it. I should probably tell my mother I
have to work today, I already know she
wonā€™t be pleased, but she can get over it.
ā€œI have to go to work today, so you can
hang out here or go into town,ā€ I tell her.

ā€œYouā€™ll probably want to go to town, itā€™s
pretty boring here.ā€ Actually, Mom, itā€™s
not boring here at all, I just donā€™t want
you and Ghosty seeing each other.

ā€œI guess Iā€™ll check out the stores, maybe
they will have some cute little antique
shop.ā€ She folds her hands in front of
her.

ā€œMaybe,ā€ I whisper back, sipping on my
coffee. Suddenly thereā€™s a knock on the
door.
