The Slave

Read Story: SEASON 1 EPISODE 27

Ukeh knew that if Amara walks away getting another opportunity to speak with her alone would take time and would be difficult. He thought of what to say or do to stop her. And suddenly an idea came to him.

“I met an old man on my journey to the white man’s land, He was old but he was brave and was ready to do anything to make sure he gets to this place alive”

“And what has that got to do with me? How is it my business?” Amara asked without turning back.

Ukeh was glad that at least he got her to stand.

“Unlike the others who were captured to become slaves and who struggled to escape and go back home, this old man was glad he was on the journey”

“Then he must be a fool. For him to rejoice over being captured to become a slave.”

“He was no fool, He was infact a heroe. He was happy to be on the ship not because he wanted to be a slave but because he was on a mission.”

Amara has heard enough. She started walking away from Ukeh. Who quickly continued his story.

“He was in a mission to search and if possible rescue his grand daughter who was captured by the white men”

When Amara heard this she stood and turned to face Ukeh. This time she was interested in the story.

“His grand daughter was captured?” She asked

“Yes! His grand daughter was captured, when she went to the stream to fetch water. He was broken, he was weighed down and so he allowed himself to be captured just so he can find his grand daughter “Amara”

At this point, tears had begun to flow from her eyes pouring down her cheeks. Ukeh ignored her and brings out the bracelet that Kunti had given him and then he shows it to her.

The old man gave me this bracelet and made me promise him that I will find his grand daughter and give it to her. His name was KUNTI THE BRAVE

Amara ran to him and held the bracelet, she wept as she recognised it. “where is my grandfather? ” She cried.

Ukeh didn’t know if to laugh or cry. He was happy that she was the Amara he was looking for. He raised her up and hugged her tight.

“Thank you Jesus, thank you I have found her” he mutters to himself.

“Where is my grandfather? Please tell me he is please?” Amara cried.

“Kunti the brave tied and did everything possible to get to the white mans land. But he got sick in the ship and his wound was infected. He didn’t make it”

Amara fell down and cried like a baby. She couldn’t believe that her grandfather would risk his life like that for her sake.

Ukeh held and consoled her. He didn’t want to add to her trauma and so he didn’t mention how her grandfather had died.

“It’s alright, I made a promise to your grandfather to look after you and bring you home back to Africa. And with Jesus helping me I will fufill that promise. Please don’t cry anymore so that master Tom won’t find out anything. You must pretend that I don’t know anything about you and we are not even friends. Do you understand?

She nodded. And then they walked away in opposite directions.

But someone heard them when they were talking. His name is Gilbert and he was master Tom’s new personal assistant.
