Episode 4

I sat in the well air-conditioned Hallway with Mama, waiting for Chima to come out of Barrister Emmanuel’s office. A picture on the wall in the hallway showed a picture of a young teenage girl with a huge protruding belly. The caption under it read,

“
But she still had a future.”

The picture was like an inspiration to me. Even with my unwanted pregnancy, I could still have a future for myself. I remembered what had happened that evening, and was grateful to God that Barrister Emmanuel had come with me to China’s house.

After he had shown his ID card to Chima to prove he was a lawyer, Chima had changed his formerly arrogant attitude, and had began to plead with Mama to allow us settle without a lawyer. He now admitted to knowing me. Emmanuel had told him to dress up immediately, and come with him to his office with the girl that had been running her mouth claiming she would b*at up Mama.

The girl had turned blue, and with a subdued voice she now explained to Emmanuel that she was just a poor r*ns girl, and that he should have mercy on her.

That was three hours ago, and now Chima was in Emmanuel’s office talking with him. The door to Emmanuel’s office opened, and Chima walked out with a slumped shoulder and a sad face. He came to Mama, knelt on the tiled floor with tears, and began to ask for forgiveness, pleading with her not to sue him with r*pe as he had not actually forced me.

Mama sat silently, ignoring him completely.

Chima continued,

“I’ll take care of the child and Nne till after her delivery, giving you 25,000 Naira every month. And then take care of the child’s schooling till he or she is grown. Please just beg your lawyer not to send me to jail.”

I turned and found Emmanuel standing at the door to his office, smiling at the unfolding drama. That was when I realized, that Emmanuel was simply “My angel in disguise.”

My eyes welled up with tears.

Emmanuel had saved me and my mom from this predicament.
