Episode 6

When we got home, Mama didnā€™t talk to me. She just went straight into her room and shut the door. Moments later, I heard her sobbing in grief and I couldnā€™t help but feel heartbroken and pained at what I had done.

I sighed and sat on one of the cushions in the parlor and placed my head on my palms, deep in thought at what Chima had told me. Memories of what Chimaā€™s fat neighbor had told me on that day when I had come looking for Chima came to my mind.

ā€œChima no bi better person. I de suspect am since say na cultists he be. Fine girl, leave this boy now before itā€™s too late and he becomes your enemy when heā€™s done using you,ā€ she had advised.

I had of course listened to what she had said with a smile on my face, but when she was done I told her with a smile that I was just friends with Chima.

ā€œA full grown man and a young lady can never be just friends,ā€ was her reply before she walked into her house.

My head began to pound from a sudden headache, and I suddenly felt the strong urge to throw up. I ran into the bathroom, and threw up in the sink, panting hard.

My eyes welled with tears as I remembered what Chima had said.

ā€œNa who de alive born pikin,go chop my money.ā€

I shivered in fear, and grabbed my belly as though to assure myself that no one could kill my baby.

A knock sounded at the door, and I wondered who it was that late evening. I wasnā€™t expecting anyone after all. Mama also came out with tears stained face. I asked who it was severally, but no one replied. I rather heard a person moan quietly in pain. I tried opening the door, but Mama told me not to unless the person said who he/she was. I wanted to walk away, but I heard the moan again, this time louder than the first.

I opened the door, and I couldnā€™t help but scream in shock.

Emmanuel was lying on our doorstep, barely alive and in a pool of blood.
