Episode 9

I stood outside, praying to God to help Emmanuel survive. He was someone i had met that day, but how kind he had been to me and Mama had told me he was a different kind of man. Mama was inside with Mama Emeka, helping out in whatever little way she could.

I was still pacing the front yard, when I suddenly heard Mama Emeka begin to panic.

“I’ll Put pressure to the wound, and you’ll give him mouth to mouth. Now push his chest three times, and repeat the mouth to mouth,” Mama Emeka ordered.

I heard Mama breath heavily for some seconds, but a moment later she was equally panicking.

“Mama Emeka, you better save his life oh, let him not die oh.”

I rushed inside now, to find Mama Emeka backing away from Emmanuel with tears welling up in her eyes.

I rushed to Emmanuel, and began to slap his cheeks, telling him to wake up. Willing him not to die like a coward, as no one had known what a good man he was.

Mama was already crying quietly at a corner. I felt Mama Emeka trying to pull me away while gently telling me that He was already dead. I shrugged her hands off, refusing to cry and believing he wasn’t really dead.

“You don’t dare die on me. Did you hear me? You haven’t helped me and my baby yet. Chima threatened me today, he said I wouldn’t be alive to deliver this baby. What are you going to do about it? Eh?,” I asked him angrily.

His still dead face was making me begin to panic too. I angrily raised my fist up, and hit him really hard on the chest while screaming,

“You coward!!”

His eyes opened, and he spat blood all over me. Mama Emeka rushed towards him, and pushed me aside, screaming that this was a miracle.

I stepped outside, and sat down on the doorstep, hearing Mama Emeka’s voice as she kept telling Mama that she had never seen this kind of miracle before.

I looked at the blood all over my clothes, and myself, and sighed in happiness.

“I’m going to give birth to this baby Chima, and there’s nothing you’ll do about it.”
