Episode 15

“please where are you guys taking me?” i nervously asked the policemen with me, expecting an answer but they simply ignored me, saying nothing.
“please i beg of you, tell me” i pleaded directly to the policeman by my right hand. The officer just sighed and eyed me, saying nothing, which really left me clueless on what next to do or expect. I just couldn’t believe it was all real..

On getting to a junction about 20 kilometers away from Owerri main town, the two cars took a sharp right and headed to a divisional police headquarters which was just about four poles away from the junction. I heaved a sigh of relief, as the convoy headed to the back of the police station.

Within seconds, I was roughly dragged out of the car and thrown on the dirt with five police officers kicking and hitting me with batons. I screamed, cried and pleaded for mercy while Tessy’s Ex husband simply watched on with a dirty smile of satisfaction on his face.
The beating however stopped when an elderly high ranking police officer showed up. He drew close and peered at my face with concern.

“you mean this innocent looking young man is the culprit that has been fueling all the crisis in your family?” he asked Tessy’s Ex husband who nodded silently.

“unbelievable” the old officer breathed.
“can you believe she left my kids for almost a week just to be with him?. I caught them together. Your men can testify to that” Tessy’s Ex husband explained, while my instinct quickly made me do the imaginable without caring for the little self esteem i had left.

I launched forward without warning, taking the policemen that surrounded me with surprise and throwing myself on Tessy’s husband’s feet, grabbing his right leg.
“please i’m so sorry sir, just let me go. I promise, i swear i will stay away from your family forever. Just let me go” I begged with my whole heart.

The last thing on my mind was caring to know if the man had the right to treat me the way he was doing. All i wanted was simply to go home and erase the nightmare from my memory. I couldn’t afford letting myself be thrown into jail because of Tessy. I couldn’t afford putting my family into another trauma. I couldn’t afford letting things explode more than it had already exploded. I had a lot to lose in both ways. The only easy way out was throwing away my pride to beg him to free me. That was the only easy way out of the situation.

“I beg of you just let me go” i sobbed.
“i’m sorry young, but i really have no business with you. I only will listen to your father. That’s the only person that can get you out of here” he said coldly, flinging his leg to wade me off.

“my father isn’t alive” i sobbed.
“then i will talk with your mother. Your mother for your freedom” he muttered seriously while i wailed even deeper.
“noooo not my mother” i sobbed. The poor woman already had gone through a lot for my sake. I couldn’t imagine how she would take the news or how i would face my family afterwards. At my age i was supposed to be the father of the family and not the prodigal son.

The news could kill the poor woman. She could suffer severe heartbreak over it.
