Read Story: SEASON 1 EPISODE 25

I faced palmed.

Inside I was going wild with the worst feelings ever. Dissatisfied, agitated, frustrated and all. I could not really believe he was divorcing me. Could I honestly believe he still loved me more than Joyce? He was leaving me, pregnant and alone. I stared at my cappuccino that was barely touched and had grown cold. I wanted to cry but I could not.

“Are you okay?”

I looked up only to find Val looking at me with concern

. I had already paid for the second cup and wasn’t expecting her to stop at my table.

“Yes Val, am okay. Thanks.”

She removed her apron and settled on the seat Uri had left.

“Aren’t you supposed to be working?”

“No, my shift just ended.”

“Oh, okay.”

“Am old enough and literate enough to read the word divorce and know when couples are separating.”

I twitched the edge of my mouth.

“Am sorry for what you are going through.”

“Thanks Val.”

“You know if he is already moving on after leaving you, even before you sign the damn papers it tells a lot about how he really feels.”

“I know.”

“Wait here.”

She rose and went to the counter and grabbed a small basket then came back with it.

“Pick one.” She told me.

“What are those?”

“Fortune cookies.”

“I don’t believe in those.”

“Come on, just pick one.”

Sighing I extended my arm and picked one folded piece of paper.

“Now what?”

“Open it.”

Sighing yet again I proceeded to open the paper.

Fear not, for I Am with you.

Be not dismayed, for I am your God

I will strengthen you,

Yes, I will help you,

I will uphold you with My righteous right hand Isaiah 41:10

“Am grateful for this I needed to hear this.” I said amidst tears.

She placed her hands over mine.

“You are going to be fine.”

“I know for a fact they don’t print Bible verses on fortune cookies and I have never seen you guys giving fortune cookies before.”

“You are right we don’t. It was an idea I came up with

. We just printed uplifting bible verses and placed them in this cookie basket. We only give them out to people who seem like they needed one.”

“That’s very thoughtful of you.”

“Some people don’t think so, they just see us like the enemies trying to shove religion down their throat.”

“That’s too bad.

“I know.”

“I just can’t believe he walked out of me even after I told him I was pregnant.”

She leaned towards me. Instinctively I did the same.

“Can I tell you a secret?”

I nodded.

“He is one stupid man and will regret this once it’s too late. You don’t walk away from good things no matter what.”

I leaned back and managed a smile.

“We should be paying for this extra services.”

“Now that you have mentioned it there is a donation jar at the counter.”

“You did not waste a second.”

“No, opportunities come once.”

We both laughed.

“Val as much as I love having a chat with you, it’s getting late. I should be on my way.”

“Of course.”

“Thanks again for everything.”

“Don’t mention it.”

I rose and wore my blue trench coat. Inside I had some change and just as Val had asked I placed them inside the donation jar.

. I reached at the restaurant door and shifted my handbag from the right hand to the left so that I could easily manage the door.

“Let me get that for you.”

Austin said from behind me and proceeded to open the door for me.

“Ladies first.”

I nodded and proceeded to walk out.

“I could drive you home, you don’t look too well.”

“Austin I can drive myself, thank you.”

“It’s none of my business but who was that man I saw leaving earlier?”

“Were you watching me?”

“No I walked in and I saw you, I wanted to walk up to say hi then he beat me to it.”

“He is my husband soon to be ex-husband.”

“Am so sorry to hear that.”

We had stopped talking and we were standing beside my car.

“It’s getting late.”

“Am calling an Uber for you.”

I honestly was out of energy to argue after receiving the last punch from Uri.

He fished out his phone and ordered for an Uber drive. We had to wait for the nearest Uber was fifteen minutes away. I crossed my arms very determined not to be charmed into speaking by him.

“I think he is stupid.”

“huh?”

“Your husband is stupid… soon to be ex I mean.”

I rolled my eyes.

“Am willing to listen if you want to vent.”

I shook my head.

“Okay let’s just wait it out in silent.”

He started to pace around clearly trying to kill time.

“I am pregnant with his kid.”

He stopped the pacing.

“She is pregnant with twins. I lost my girl a year ago and I can’t accept that he is just leaving me and my baby like that for Joyce the woman at work I always complain about. I thought he was just playing, not really wanting a divorce. I don’t want my baby to grow without a father who loves him and his mama. I just want to be loved on like nothing else matter. Is that too much to ask? Tell me Austin are you also this heartless?” I went on ranting.

“I can’t speak for Uri, Ella.”

“Of course you can’t.”

“You have to take it easy.”

I bit my lower lip and let tears freely flow from my eyes. Austin tried holding my shoulder but I raised my left hand to let him keep off. Soon the Uber was there and I climbed it without a word. Austin paid the cab.

I took my car keys out of my trench coat and shoved them into Austin’s hand.

“I want my car home first thing tomorrow.”

I signaled the Uber driver and we left.
