Read Story: SEASON 1 EPISODE 27

I Put The Pen Down.

It was done. We were done. Our marriage officially over. Maybe a few thunder rumble would have roared to mark such a tumultuous end. Instead it was quite, awfully quite. Every one keeping their thought to themselves. I watched as Uri picked the pen and signed to finalize. Then Jimmy and Jerry my husband’s work partner, signed as witnesses. My mum was present but she sat aloof just watching everything.

When it was over Robert thanked us and left.

“I think I will wait in the car.” Jerry said and excused himself.

Uriel stood rubbing his hands clearly tensed under the hawkish eye of his ex-in laws and me.

“Am sorry it had to end like this.”

We stared at him not saying anything.

“You don’t have to be sorry for wanting something I couldn’t give you, whatever that is

. I hope you find peace and happiness with Joyce.” I said.

He nodded. Idiot.

“I will see you out.” Jimmy offered.

I remained standing while Jimmy and Uri started to go out. It all happened so fast. One minute it was silent, the next Jimmy had Uri pinned on the wall. Both mum and I rushed to where Uri was.

“Jimmy let him go.” We shouted.

“I gave you my sister in good faith and this is how you are treating her? You are leaving her with her unborn child for that witch at work. What the hell Uri!”

“First don’t disrespect Joyce like that and second you did not give me your sister

. Last time I checked she was in love with me and that is why we were together.”

“You have got some nerve Uri, for the sake of what we used to be I will let you walk out of here with your head on top of that neck.”

Jimmy groaned with a lot of anger and frustration.

“Listen and listen to me carefully. The moment you walk out of this door, this child in my sister’s stomach cease to be yours. Nothing whatsoever should ever bring us together and most importantly you cease to be my friend. Nobody hurts my family and stays close.”

“That kid is mine too. He needs a father.” Uri challenged.

In anger I stepped closer to him.

“Uri you call yourself a father. Tell me something. Will you be able to explain to him why he has twin siblings a month older than him? Or that you left his mom for another while he was in the womb? Uri you are many things to this child but one thing you are not is his father.”

Jimmy released him and he adjusted his coat before leaving without a word. Uri slammed the door in much anger.

“To hell with you!”

My mum shook her head. It was really over. I was no longer a Mrs. Jackson. It felt strange being stripped of a title like that. I felt n*ked with all the prospects I was left with crisscrossing through my already full head.

Divorcee, single mother…..uuuuh

I sank on the sofa. Jimmy and my mother settled on the couch beside me.

“It’s all going to be okay.”

“Am i?”

“You already falling first and hard at the rate of a thousand nautical miles per second, that’s how am sure.”

“What is that even supposed to mean?”

“You think we all don’t notice things around here but we do. We are here to take care of you and part of that means we have to notice things.”

I coiled to deeper into my couch and curled into myself. I made a small laugh. I had an ex-husband, a child growing in my womb, a house that I could no longer stay in and savings I wish he never gave me.

. All this generosity made me feel that in the future if he came back, wanting contact with his son he would have some leverage over me. I wondered if he would regret, if he could turn back anytime now and say he was just being stupid. It would be too late. All the beauty I had saw inside him was now masked inside this new character he had shown. He had always been that kind guy I was lucky to have. He had shown me he could love and loved me till it felt unreal. Every day I had slept in his bed thinking one day I would wake up and he would be a changed man. It never happened till it happened. Quickly, smoothly and it was over now.

“Jimmy, what do I do now?”

“This is a lot to deliberate on at once, take your time and if you need anything from us we are here for you.”

“Am not ready to make such drastic choices in my life.”

“You don’t have a choice my love.” My mum said.

She sat on the armrest and her hand rested on my hair.

“You are going to be okay.”

Jimmy sat staring at the door. He was still visibly angry. I stretched my hand held his right hand.

“Am sorry about Uri.”

“I still can’t believe he walked out on you like that, I still can’t believe it.”

“He walked out and we have both lost a friend.”

“Mum.”

“Yes, Ella.”

“Can we go to your place? I could use a change of scenery.”

“Sure.”
