Episode 20

“I’m not leaving you behind Emmanuel. I have to stay and help you,” I whimpered.

“You want to help me? Nne, if you want to help me then get out of here,” he said with his eyes staring straight at mine.

I was about to say something else, but he shook his head.

“There’s no time for goodbyes. Just bear this in mind, You have to call Amina my fiancee with my phone, and tell her exactly what happened here today. She’ll know what to do.”

I stared at him, wondering why an angel like him had to come from a demon incarnate. He was smiling at me, while holding the Governor in place.

“Goodbye Nne.”

I looked at him, and I could see that he was afraid. He wasn’t feeling brave about whatever he was planning on doing, but he wanted to make sure I saw him as a strong man.

As I walked backwards towards the door that led out of the building, I saw Emmanuel smile gaily at me.

“When the baby comes, you can tell him I’m his father. I’m sure he would be glad to have had a lawyer father.”

Tears began to stream down my eyes, and I couldn’t bear to look at Emmanuel anymore. I turned, and began to hurry outside.

The sky was already dark, and the sun was beginning to set in a beautiful flash of colors in the West. Birds were singing gaily on trees, as I looked around me.

My surrounding was familiar. It was a compound in the next street from my house. The compound I was in had a lot of motor spare parts lying around. The building I had come from was a Four storey affair without windows and doors. The Governor’s cars was still in the compound, but were empty.

I was about to begin going home when I heard The Governor screaming. I turned and saw Emmanuel on the third floor dragging the Governor closer to the precipice with the gun still at his head.

Emmanuel was smiling at me.

I turned and began going back home, with tears in my eyes. Moments later, I heard the thud of two bodies hitting the ground violently.

I began to weep.

My angel had died for me.
